Northern NSW on tenterhooks as fire danger remains serious

An eagle-eyed pilot coming into land at Melbourne Airport has helped emergency services stop a major fire in Oaklands Junction.

An abandoned pile of building materials had caught alight at an unoccupied rural property on Somerton Rd about 10.30pm on October 22 and was threatening to spread when its glow was spotted from above by the passing flight.

Hume detective Senior Sergeant Ray Freeman said the pilot called in the blaze and Greenvale CFA crews were mobilised into action.

“When firefighters arrived they found a pile of recycled building materials on fire,” Sen-Sgt Freeman said.

He said the crews managed to contain the blaze to the 32sq m pile.

“Police have confirmed a previous bonfire held next to the pile of building rubbish had not been extinguished properly and caused the fire,” Sen-Sgt Freeman said.

“It appears the occupants of the property are away at the moment and police are waiting to speak to them.”

Sen-Sgt Freeman said the blaze caused a large amount of smoke and it was lucky it didn’t spread further.
