Craigieburn station has been voted one of the worst in Melbourne. But its planned new commuter carpark could change all that — and long-awaited designs have finally been revealed.

The booming station’s new carpark will be built along the eastern edge of the Hume Highway and linked to the station by a pedestrian footpath, the state government has revealed.

The 745-space carpark, which will open to the public in mid-2020, will boost the total number of spaces to 1100.

In the 2017 RACV and Leader Community News On Track survey, commuters rated Craigieburn Station as one of the 10 worst, with lack of parking one of the main issues.

The carpark will also have CCTV and lighting throughout, and along a new pedestrian path to the station.

The new carpark will run along the Hume Highway and link the station with a pedestrian bridge.

A signalised pedestrian crossing will be installed at Potter St to ensure safe passage to and from the station for commuters.

Multiple entry and exit points are included in the design to help minimise traffic congestion.

The project will also include new bicycle facilities.

Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the new carpark would bring much-welcomed relief to Craigieburn commuters.

“We will continue to work with the local community and the experts as we refine the design ahead of construction,” Ms Spence said.

Building will start in early 2020, following further technical assessments, the development of a reference design and planning permit approval processes.

The designs come after an online survey in October 2018 asking Craigieburn residents for their feedback.

The survey revealed that more than 50 per cent of commuters were parking in neighbouring streets, clogging them up for residents.

More than 30 new parking spaces on Potter St will also open by mid-2019 to help ease congestion in the short term.
