A man who was caught speeding while on drugs told police he was a daily drug user — so an illicit substance was “always” in his system.
Samir Fahra also told police his claustrophobia had caused him to drive 42km/h over the speed limit in morning traffic in Doncaster East, Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court heard.
The 33-year-old fronted the court on Wednesday, August 26, pleading guilty to driving offences as well as charges that cannot be published.
The court heard police followed Fahra as he accelerated along Reynolds Rd, Doncaster East, about 9.14am on May 22, 2019.
They clocked him doing 112km/h in a 70km/h zone, before they stopped him and a drug test revealed he had methamphetamine and cannabis in his system.
Leading Senior Constable Matthew Toohey said Fahra told police he intentionally sped to overtake “a big, slow truck” because he got claustrophobic.
He said he smoked bongs daily, using a gram of cannabis a day on average.
“I’ve been smoking cannabis since I was 14, it’s always in my stream,” Fahra told officers.
Fahra then refused to do a drug test when he was pulled over on Childs Rd, Lalor about 10.24am on January 16 for driving an unregistered car.
The court heard Fahra had prior convictions for recklessly causing injury, criminal damage and driving while suspended.
His lawyer, Ennes Marcellus, said his client started using cannabis use at an early age.
Magistrate Ian Alger said Fahra clearly needed to address his cannabis use, sentencing him to the 20 days he had already spent in prison on other matters, and convicting and fining him $1627.40.
Fahra’s licence was cancelled for two years.
