Quang Ho: Gun, drugs allegedly found at Mochrie Grove, Cairnlea home

A Cairnlea man, who was asleep behind the wheel of a running car in Reservoir, allegedly floored it when he was woken by police. They allegedly then found he had a large supply of drugs — some down his pants — and a gun at home.

Quang Ho has been granted bail.

A man who was asleep behind the wheel of a running car allegedly bolted when he was woken by police, leading them on a high-speed chase.

Quang Ho was allegedly then found to have a haul of drugs and cash on him, and to have a gun, more drugs and cash, and other IDs at his Cairnlea home.

The unemployed 32-year-old fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 12, having been locked up for 29 days.

The court heard police found Ho asleep in the driver’s seat of his running car in Henty St, Reservoir about 4.30am on July 14.

Constable Tim Bentley said when he went to open the driver’s door through the open car window, Ho woke and immediately drove away, before he was arrested by other patrolling police shortly after.

Police allegedly then discovered 4g of methamphetamine in the car’s passenger footwell, and 7g of methamphetamine in Ho’s wallet, along with $1200 in $100 notes.

Ho allegedly had $100 on him, as well as two phones which contained texts about drug dealing.

Constable Bentley said at the police station Ho was also found to be hiding 16g of methamphetamine in his underpants and prescription medication on him.

A search of Ho and his girlfriend’s bedroom at his mum’s Mochrie Grove home then allegedly uncovered an air rifle, a safe under the bed containing six $100 notes, prescription medication in another name, identification cards in another man’s name and an ecstasy pill.

The court heard Ho was believed to be dealing methamphetamine to support his own drug habit, which police believed would continue if he was granted bail.

Lawyer Chris Brydon said his client, a father of two children not in his care, had suffered from a serious methamphetamine addiction for more than a decade.

Mr Brydon said Ho would be disputing the firearm charge and testing the device and the drugs would take some time, meanwhile custody was particularly onerous due to conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Magistrate Ian Alger agreed to grant Ho bail with the support and supervision of the Court Integrated Services Program, placing him on a curfew and banning him from using drugs.
