Samih Kabbout kept arsenal of illegal weapons in Glenroy family home, court hears

A Glenroy father who hears voices stockpiled a cache of illegal weapons and kept a loaded gun wrapped in blankets underneath the bed in which he and his children slept — until an early morning police raid.

Samih Kabbout, 36, sometimes heard voices and was banned from owning a gun after spending time in jail in 2017, the court heard.

A Glenroy father of three stockpiled an arsenal of illegal weapons at home and kept a loaded gun underneath his young children’s bed, a court has heard.

Samih Kabbout, 36, pleaded guilty at the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to a raft of weapons charges including being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Police raided Kabbout’s home shortly before 7am on May 6 where they found a taser, an imitation longarm firearm and gun powder, Constable Aaron Towns told the court.

A loaded sawn-off bolt-action gun with 22 caliber rounds was found wrapped in blankets underneath the family’s bed in which Kabbout, his wife and their three young sons slept, he told the court.

Magistrate Rosemary Falla told the court a psychiatric report from 2017 suggested Kabbout struggled with mental health problems and sometimes heard voices.

Kabbout’s lawyer told the court his client, who was convicted and sentenced to jail in 2017 for similar offending, was awaiting the outcome of a new psychiatric report.

His client had a “traumatic” upbringing in Lebanon and he asked the court to defer sentencing until the new psychiatric report was completed.

“He has been somewhat brutalised by his father which has resulted at some stage to his father shooting at him and hitting him in the leg,” Kabbout’s lawyer told the court.

Ms Falla deferred sentencing to August 24 and Kabbout was remanded to reappear on that date.
