The Craigieburn line had more crimes committed at its stations than any other railway line in Melbourne’s northern suburbs in the past year, new data reveals.

An offence was committed almost every day at a Craigieburn line station in the year to March

Crime Statistics Agency data shows Broadmeadows station was the worst hit on the line with 96 criminal offences reported to police.

Of those offences, 30 were theft from vehicles, 22 were drug related and 19 were related to assault, robbery and dangerous acts.

The line had a total of 324 criminal offences recorded on it, which was down from the two years prior.

The Mernda line wasn’t far behind and recorded 305 criminal incidents between April and March.

It was an increase on the two years prior, with 286 incidents recorded between April 2018 and March 2019, and 246 the year before that.

Epping station had the most criminal incidents with 48, up 41 per cent from the year before.

Twenty nine of the incidents were theft from vehicles and 10 were related to assaults, robberies and dangerous acts.

South Morang station, which was the worst station for crime on the Mernda line last year, was down from 62 incidents to 26.

Mernda station recorded the biggest growth in criminal incidents in Melbourne’s north, increasing rising to 22 incidents compared with two the year before.

The Hurstbridge line recorded its lowest crime rate in four years, with 219 incidents at its stations.

For the second year running Macleod station had the most criminal incidents, but was down from 46 the year prior to 30.

However, 25 of those incidents were theft from vehicles.

The safest line in Melbourne’s north was Upfield which recorded its lowest rate of crime in the past five years.

Only 168 incidents occurred, down from 228 the year before.

Coburg was the hardest hit station, but still only recorded 25 incidents of which 13 were theft from vehicles.
