A YOUNG drug-affected mother who was out on bail when she went on a crime spree, stealing tools, mail and splashing thousands of dollars on stolen credit cards, has this time been jailed.

Rachel Compt Barnard, 24, from Watsonia, faced the Heidelberg Magistrates Court on Thursday August 9 on multiple theft and drugs charges, and was this time refused bail.

It’s alleged Barnard went on rampages across Melbourne’s north east while on bail during the past six months.

The prosecution argued Barnard, with an accomplice, raided a parked car in Alexander St, Greensborough, in the early hours of July 26 taking goods including tools, a wallet with credit cards and Tattslotto tickets.

They also took another neighbour’s mail, which contained a credit card, before using it at servos and a shopping centre in Greensborough, Bulleen, Donvale, Ringwood and Burwood within the next 10 hours, the court heard.

Cigarettes, lighters, food, drinks, bandaids, petrol and beauty products were purchased, police alleged.

To cap off a busy morning, Barnard was later seen raiding letterboxes with two other women in Cherry Grove and Chippewa Avenue in Donvale, the prosecutor argued.

In two other incidents last year, the young mother was accused of drug-driving on September 2, then holding onto a stash of cocaine and ice in ziplock bags on December 20, the court heard.

The prosecutor said Barnard showed a “blatant disregard to bail and conditions imposed on her”. She said Barnard didn’t stick to curfew hours, report to Greensborough Police Station and provided false details on occasion when she was previously bailed.

The defence argued her offending “deteriorated when she began using ice” 12 months ago and the crimes were “not serious examples”.

Friend Emily Long, who lives in Mitcham with her three children, said she would house Barnard if bail was granted.

“I wouldn’t consider her a drug addict …(and) they (drugs) won’t be allowed,” Ms Long said.

Magistrate Ian Alger said she was an “unacceptable risk” and refused bail.

Barnard will reappear in court on September 10.
