What happens in a criminal trial?

A MOTHER-OF-FOUR who blew six times the legal limit after crashing into another car in Mill Park has escaped with a fine and lost her licence for four years.

Brooke Hunter, 40, pleaded guilty to careless and drink-driving charges in the Heidelberg Magistrates Court today.

The court heard Hunter was travelling north along Mill Park Drive about 3.10am on Saturday, January 20, when she veered onto the other side of the road, smashing into an oncoming car.

The woman blew 0.301 and told officers at the time she had drunk five glasses of wine.

The defence said there was “no excuse” for her behaviour but highlighted Hunter had an argument with her partner and wanted to buy cigarettes.

“In hindsight she shouldn’t have but she has taken responsibility for her actions,” the defence said.

In sentencing, Magistrate Robert Kumar said he considered jailing Hunter but instead dished out a $2000 fine and cancelled her licence for four years.

“People must understand their consequences … innocent people could’ve been killed,” Mr Kumar said.

“It’s amazing they weren’t given you were six times over the legal limit.”
