Oakland Junction pensioner’s beloved dog gets a charity helping hand
When Jeanette Freeman’s beloved rescue dog, Highway, was seriously injured, the Oakland Junction pensioner considered selling her car to pay the vet. But then her sister told her about a group that could ease the financial pain.

Jeanette Freeman’s pets are her world.
That’s why the disability pensioner was devastated when her rescue dog, Highway, caught his leg in a cattle grate — a type of obstacle used to stop livestock from passing — and broke the tibia and the fibula in his hind left leg.
“He ran to me and dropped at my feet,” Ms Freeman said.
“He was crying”
But the 63-year-old had no money to pay the more than $2000 required for the surgery.
“I was going to sell my car just to keep my dog,” Ms Freeman said.
“It’s only an old Ford ute, but I would have raised just enough money … to pay the (veterinary) bill.”
Then the Oakland Junction resident’s sister told her about Pet Medical Crisis.
Founded in 2010, the not-for-profit organisation steps in when pensioners can’t afford the veterinary care for their beloved pets.
Founder Jennifer Hunt said the money was aimed at helping prevent unnecessary euthanasia.
“We give a maximum of $1000 and then when more is required we try and raise funds,” she said.
“Jeanette only has another $300 required, but for her it is enormous.”
Ms Hunt said owners needed to have exhausted all avenues of funding such as family and friends or a Centrelink loan.
“We are a last resort,” she said.

Ms Hunt said they were dependent on public donations to provide the treatment for pets in need.
Ms Freeman said she was overwhelmed by the help.
“Gratitude and a pat on the back for … Pet Medical Crisis. They are absolutely magical people,” she said.
“It’s been a hard road, but I don’t care because (Highway) is still here with me.
“My animals, they are my world.”
