The concept design for the redevelopment of the Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre has been revealed.
Designed by Warren and Mahoney Architects over six months, the facility is aiming for a 6-star green star rating and will have a range of environmentally friendly design features.
Such features could include an airtight facade, solar panels covering the roof and a timber structure to the pool hall.
The centre could also be the first public pool to use electricity for maintaining the temperature of the water, saving emissions by using renewable technologies, instead of gas heating.
The total estimated cost for the project is $63.5 million, including $26.4 million for the building and $15.3 million for the pools.

The proposed centre will have an outdoor, 10-lane, 50m pool, an indoor, 8-lane, 25m pool, steam and sauna rooms, a gym, daycare, and a cafe.
Construction is expected to begin in 2021 and be completed by 2024.
Community consultation will take place in April and May.
