Motorists travelling on a major freeway are facing more than 40 minute delays after a multi-vehicle crash and fuel spillage.

Four of the five citybound lanes are closed on CityLink/Tullamarine Fwy near Bulla Rd in Essendon North.

The crash has also caused more than 40 minute delays on the Calder Fwy, with traffic backing up to Kings Rd.

The traffic jam on the Tullamarine Fwy begins at the M80 Ring Rd — resulting in 25 minute delays.

Drivers wanting to avoid the congestion are urged to detour early, with the M80 Ring Rd providing access to alternative routes including Pascoe Vale Rd, Sydney Rd, Sunshine Ave and Ballarat Rd.

A Department of Transport spokesman said motorists on CityLink should obey the overhead signals and be alert for crews working on the roadway.

“These lane closures are under the control of emergency services and will re-open only when investigations are complete and it’s safe to do so,” he said.

“Our signals team is monitoring conditions in the area and will adjust traffic lights to minimise congestion on surrounding roads.”
