A failed Melbourne businessman who sold cocaine and heroin to three undercover cops and even offered to fly them to Sydney to bring back more drugs has been jailed for at least two years and nine months.

Gursewak Singh, a father-of-two from Wollert, appeared for sentencing in County Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to trafficking in a commercial quantity of heroin, cocaine, trafficking morphine and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.

The police tricked him into selling them cocaine and heroin by putting a bag of drugs in their car and asking his help to change a tyre at the Spring Square shopping centre in Hallam on August 10, 2023.

When Singh spotted a bag of drugs in the cops’ car, he said “It’s what we do” and retrieved a bundle of cash and said “We do everything”.

When a covert operative clarified what he meant, he said “We do everything. We don’t do it, we sell it”. When asked if he sold cocaine, he confirmed this while pointing to the cash in his hand. He introduced himself as “Sunny” telling the officers that he was a bulk supplier and that there was no point unless “you make $40,000 to $50,000 per night”.

The officers asked if they could buy cocaine that night and Singh said he had sold the last of his cocaine but had heroin available and handed over a plastic bag with the drug in it. In subsequent meetings, Singh showed them a picture of a vacuum sealed bag with 22kg of cocaine that was arriving the next day.

He said “bricks” were coming from Sydney and offered to fly the officers to Sydney to bring it back.

Singh said he was a “ghost” who would not deal with them directly but would give them locations for collection of drugs and dropping off money.

Gursewak Singh told the operatives that he was happy to deliver heroin and cocaine anywhere in Melbourne.

The officers agreed to purchase 500 grams each of heroin and cocaine on September 1 and they met Singh at Storage King in Epping where he was arrested.

“It’s evident you were aware of the nature of the transactions you facilitated. I find your moral culpability to be high,” Judge Samantha Marks said.

“The fact is once you noticed the deal bag in the car, you made it clear to the operatives you would aid to obtain large amounts of drugs for the purpose of sale.”

Police seized nearly 556 grams of cocaine and 531 grams of heroin from Singh.

The charge of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime relates to $550,000 that was deposited into Singh’s bank account by eight people from Victoria, NSW and South Australia who were conned into investing in bonds through a company that he controlled.

The total sentence imposed was four years’ and eight months’ jail.
