My Tiny Home Kit boss Spencer Porter pleads guilty to failing to supply tiny homes to dozens of customers

Spencer Porter has admitted to ripping off dozens of customers who purchased tiny homes from his company.

A self-styled “entrepreneur” behind a string of failed businesses has pleaded guilty to a string of nationwide rorts stemming from his now-defunct tiny home company.

Spencer William Porter, 25, of Clyde North, pleaded guilty to 42 breaches of the Australian Consumer Law on Wednesday, over payments his former company, My Tiny Home Kit, received for tiny homes that it never delivered.

Each charge carries a potential $2.5m fine, but Porter is unlikely to be able to pay any significant penalty, after telling the court he was unable to afford a lawyer for Wednesday’s hearing.

Porter, who is bankrupt, told the court he would be represented at his sentencing proceedings in the County Court later this year.

Porter’s companies, My Tiny Home Kit and Property Magician, collapsed last year owing more millions to hundreds out-of-pocket customers, former staff and other creditors.

The criminal charges Porter pleaded guilty to each stem from him accepting payments for tiny homes his company never supplied.

When Porter, dressed in an ill-fitting suit jacket and a Hawaiian shirt, was asked how he wished to deal with each of the charges, he responded, “I plead guilty, your honour”.

Dozens of Porter’s customers paid large deposits for tiny home kits, and were either sent incomplete kits of construction materials, or, in some cases, nothing at all.

One customer told A Current Affair last year: “Spencer Porter needs to be stopped.”

Another said he was “delusional”, while a third said he was “the biggest scumbag I have ever met”.

Porter’s offending commenced in December 2021 and continued until the company’s collapse in mid-2024.

When Porter’s companies were placed into liquidation and the scale of his unfulfilled orders emerged, he said: “My commitment to fulfilling those orders was genuine, and I did everything in my power to meet the expectations of those who trusted me.”

Porter entered an enforceable undertaking with Consumer Affairs Victoria in the months before My Tiny Home Kit collapsed. He blamed the cost of complying with the undertaking for the company’s ultimate demise.

Porter’s attempts to set up businesses have all ended in failure. At 15, he set up a social media app, Zahoom, which failed.

His other failed businesses include another social media app, a real estate agency, a telecommunications company and an NDIS provider.

Porter will be sentenced in October.
