Metro investigating after boy separated from father at Diamond Creek station

A young boy is still “traumatised” after he was trapped in a Metro train while it pulled away, leaving his helpless father behind on the platform. And the train driver’s excuse for the bungle was baffling.

Metro is investigating after the doors on a Hurstbridge-bound service snapped shut behind a five-year-old child, leaving his father stranded on the platform to watch helplessly as the train left the station.

Speaking exclusively to the Leader, the Hurstbridge father who did not want to be named, said his son jumped onto the train at Diamond Creek station on Sunday, March 1 about 4pm.

As he went to grab his son’s bicycle, the father said the train doors had already shut.

“I kept pressing the button but the train just took off,” he said.

“The driver clearly didn’t check his monitors and was just trying to make up a time — the train left so quickly there were still nine of us left on the platform who couldn’t get on.”

The young boy was reunited with his father two stops later at Hurstbridge station.

“I immediately ran to the car, got in and drove to Hurstbridge,” the father said.

“He’s still traumatised from this.”

The father claims he spoke to the driver responsible while he picked up his son at the end of the line.

“He blamed me and said ‘you should have been closer to the carriage so I could see you’ — showed no remorse whatsoever,” he said.

Metro spokesman Andrew Nelson confirmed an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

“We never want to see a situation where a child is separated from their parents,” he said.

“The safety of our passengers is a top priority, and we investigate every incident on the network.

“As is standard practice for all incidents, Metro will interview the train driver, analyse CCTV footage, and follow up directly with the passengers involved to understand what happened.”
