Mernda: Hit and run leaves 13-year-old boy seriously injured and traumatised

THE mother of a high school student in Melbourne’s north who was seriously injured by a car as he was crossing the road has hit out at the driver who didn’t stop to help her son.

A MERNDA schoolboy has been left seriously injured after a broad daylight hit and run.

The 13-year-old was left to limp home after his leg was fractured in the collision, which happened while he crossed Bridge Inn Rd at the intersection of Breadalbane Ave and Mernda Village Drive about 3.30pm last Thursday.

Kylie Liz said her 13-year-old son, who was too traumatised to speak about the incident, had to “fend for himself” after he was hit.

“The car clipped him, knocking him on the road, and the tyre hit his ankle,” she said.

The female driver stopped briefly after the accident and popped her head out of the window to ask if her dazed son was OK.

“He was in shock so thought he was, although his foot was hurting.”

Once the victim had pulled himself up using the car as a brace, the driver left her car to remove her headlight guard, which had been knocked off during the accident, from the road.

“She took the piece of the car back and drove off,” Ms Liz said.

By the time he had limped home his ankle was “shockingly swollen” and an X-ray completed at Northern Hospital revealed a fractured fibula.

Ms Liz was angry her son had not been helped by the driver following the accident.

“He’s wearing a moon boot and the thought of walking to and from school now makes him anxious, which he never was before,” she said.

It was important children were never left alone after an accident, Ms Liz said.

“My message for anyone — not just this woman — if something like this happens, even if you think it’s minor or that the person is OK, take no chances,” she said.

“Stay with the child, call their parents, get medical help.

“Anything is better than driving off and letting them fend for themselves.”

Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
