Highpoint Shopping Centre set for major upgrade as wave of new stores open
With a bold facelift in the pipeline and dramatic 30-year masterplan, Highpoint has its sights set on becoming Melbourne’s premier shopping centre.
One of Melbourne’s largest shopping centres is positioning itself to challenge mega retail centre Chadstone with a host of new offerings — including high-profile international brands — and a 30-year village masterplan.
Highpoint Shopping Centre — which is entering its 50th year — has welcomed heavy hitters like Miniso’s largest Australian flagship store, the first Muji in Melbourne’s west,
Blue Hippo, LSKD, and Yo-Chi this year alone.
A revamp of the fresh food precinct was undertaken this year with venues such as A1 Bakery and Maguro Bar now open to the public.
A massive 30-year plan is also underway, with the shopping centre to be transformed into a mixed‑use “urban village” with retail, office, community spaces, open green areas and housing.
The upgrade will see the existing bus interchange, located inside the shopping centre, improved and relocated closer to Rosamond Rd.
The proposal will also include about 2956 new dwellings — estimated to house around 6504 residents — with a variety of residential typologies, such as build-to-rent, residential hotels, student accommodation, and serviced apartments.
A commercial office space that can house thousands of workers will also be added.
Planning approvals have been granted for some mid-rise developments outside the shopping centre core.
The next stages of the Urban Village project are in planning, with construction expected to commence in 2027/28.
Highpoint general manager Kate Rooney said there was “something for everyone” at the shopping centre, which had a low vacancy rate of 1 per cent.
“Highpoint continues to deliver a world-class fashion and shopping destination for shoppers in Melbourne’s west and is proud to be an integral part of our local community for the past 50 years,” she said.
“As the third largest fashion and shopping destination in Australia, with over 450 stores including Australian and international designer fashion, homewares and lifestyle brands, there is something for everyone available at Highpoint.”
