A tradie has totaled his mum’s car after he crashed into a power pole after hitting another car.
Labourer Matthew Ranno, 31, fronted the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to careless driving, breaching the alcohol interlock condition, and driving without a front P plate.
In February last year, Ranno was driving his mum’s red sedan when he drifted and hit another car .
A while later, Ranno drove his mum’s car into an electricity pole, causing the vehicle to flip upside down. Ranno then removed himself from the wreck.
After checking his driver’s licence, police found that Ranno had a probationary licence, which required him to have an interlock in his car.
Police also discovered the car was not displaying P plates and found the vehicle unroadworthy.
Ranno’s defence lawyer told the court his client was taking steps to gain insight into his offending and “change his behaviour”.
The lawyer also said the 31-year-old was driving his mother’s car and should have installed the interlock.
“He is remorseful about driving without an interlock … (regarding) the careless driving, he was unaware that the car was mounting the driveway,” he said.
“He was unable to repair his mother’s car (after the collision) and has to give his mum $20,000 because of that.”
The court heard Ranno was a labourer who used his car to transport tools, and a conviction against him and the loss of licence would be “detrimental” to him.
“His grandparents are elderly and need support … He is taking steps to show he is remorseful,” the lawyer said.
Magistrate Michael Smith told Ranno he needed “to be careful”.
He was convicted and fined $1250 with no further order made on his licence.
