Police are investigating a suspected case of animal cruelty after a kangaroo was found hobbling through Whittlesea with an arrow stuck in its backside on Sunday.
Animal rescuers sedated the “distressed” adult roo on the side of Ridge Rd about 2pm and removed part of the arrow, but the head remained lodged inside.
It was taken to Murrundindi Wildlife Shelter for treatment.
Help for Wildlife founder and volunteer Sue Kirwan condemned the “cruel and senseless” act.
“The poor roo was so distressed — he was confused, stressed, couldn’t get back to his mob and had a nasty wound on his backside,” she said.
“I just don’t understand why someone would do this to a helpless animal — as if police don’t have enough to deal with right now.”

Ms Kirwan said two similar incidents had occurred in Whittlesea in the past three months.
“It’s absolutely cruel and also illegal — anyone caught doing this insidious act faces hefty fines and even jail time,” she said.
Officers at Mernda police station collected the weapon and are investigating.
