Whittlesea ratepayers under financial strain as a result of the coronavirus pandemic could be able to apply for a vital rates relief package.
It comes after Whittlesea Council developed a COVID-19 financial hardship policy at last night’s council meeting — the first gathering since councillors were sacked last month.
Under the policy administrator Lydia Wilson said financially affected residents would be able to apply for a payment plan, or in serious cases, could defer rates without incurring interest until June 30, 2021.
“We understand that COVID-19 has caused significant emotional and financial stress across our community,” she said.
“We can help those in our community who are struggling to meet the costs of day-to-day life now, without creating additional financial stress when the pandemic is over, and still deliver the services we are here to provide.”
The council will also provide $50,000 to Whittlesea Community Connections — a frontline organisation helping community members with home-delivered food, vital advice and information.

The council had also tripled its business mentoring sessions to help local businesses navigate the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
Ms Wilson said these steps formed part of the council’s “first stage of support”, with more announcements expected “in due course”.
