Doughnut lovers in Melbourne’s north are in for a treat, with Gotham Doughnuts set to open in Bundoora.
The business opened its first shop in Upper Heidelberg Rd, Ivanhoe in February 2020, and quickly became a hit with locals.
The new Bundoora shop will open later this month.
Owner George Tsalikidis said all of their doughnuts were handmade and made fresh daily.
“We make them overnight; it’s a process that lasts 10 hours,” he said.
“I think the beauty about it is you’re not going to find two doughnuts that are identical because they are handmade.
“There really is an artisan feel about them.”
Bestsellers include the V-Slice, based off the vanilla slice, a cream and custard filled doughnut with a vanilla fondant on top along with chocolate drizzle, as well as traditional jam, custards and Nutella varieties.
When Covid hit last year, Mr Tsalikidis said he was worried, but the business “survived and potentially even thrived” during lockdown.
“Doughnuts are predominantly take away and they are a comfort food,” he said.
“So during these gloom and doom lockdown days a doughnut does bring a smile to your face,
especially when there is nothing else to do, a lot of people are going for walks and coming and buying doughnuts.
“It’s really good, it’s the highlight of a lot of people’s day during lockdown which is really good to see as a business owner.”
The Bundoora store will serve a range of food, including pies and sausage rolls, savoury toasted doughnuts, 18 flavours of ice cream and coffee.
All doughnuts will be baked on-site at the new premises.
“It’s a bit of a one-stop shop, and we’re really excited to open up,” Mr Tsalikidis said.
It will be based at 5 Dennison Mall Bundoora.
The Ivanhoe store is at 229 Upper Heidelberg Rd, Ivanhoe.
