A quick trip to McDonald’s turned into a nightmare for a pregnant mother after a truck crashed into her car, leaving her trapped and injured.

Rose, who was seven months pregnant at the time, left her Wallan home while her husband, Damilola, stayed behind to care for their toddler.

Damilola called her to remind her to drive safely but instead of his wife answering it was a first responder telling him his wife had been in a serious accident.

Rose was driving on the freeway when a kangaroo suddenly jumped onto the road. She slowed down, but the truck behind her failed to do the same and slammed into her car.

Damilola rushed to the scene and found his 36 weeks pregnant wife trapped in the car and drifting in and out of consciousness.

Rose sustained severe injuries including a brain bleed, fractured nose and arms, and

was forced to undergo an emergency delivery, with her newborn immediately taken to the NICU.

Damilola said he was “incredibly grateful” his wife and newborn were safe, but that the aftermath had been extremely “challenging”.

“It’s been really hard looking after two kids and my wife all by myself because my wife’s injuries mean she can’t really do much, even breast feeding, because her arms were broken,” he said.

Damilola, who is a social worker, said the ordeal had taken a toll on the young family, especially financially.

“I’ve been playing Russian roulette with the finances,” he said.

“The only car we had became a write off, which we need to drive to appointments for my wife’s rehab, and for the children.”

Damilola said part of his wife’s recovery was not covered by insurance and would have to be funded out of pocket.

“These costs, combined with the need for a new vehicle, have placed us under financial strain,’’ he said.

“That’s already overwhelmed me and since the accident I’ve had to spend on things for the baby because we weren't prepared for the baby to come so soon.”

An online fundraiser has been organised for the young family to stay afloat financially and has raised more than $7000.

Damilola thanked everyone who donated to the fundraiser, which has been “really helpful” in his wife’s “journey to recovery”.

“Im so overwhelmed for the support … I am so grateful, if could personally thank everybody that’s donated, I would be really rolling on the floor,’’ he said.

Damilola said despite “all the chaos” he was still celebrating because his family was together.

“I have two beautiful daughters and a wife and we’re alive today, so I’m really grateful.”
