A Craigieburn family has rung in 2025 with a life-changing $20m Powerball jackpot, making them Melbourne’s newest multi-millionaires.

The dad, who bought the winning ticket at The Lucky Charm Craigieburn, plans to pay off his mortgage and take his family on their first European holiday.

“This has come at a great time for me and my family. It’s a great blessing,” he said.

The Melburnian held the only division one winning entry nationally in Powerball draw 1494, drawn on January 2.

The win cements the northern suburbs’ reputation as a hotspot for lottery luck — with this Craigieburn family now joining the exclusive club of lottery winners.

In 2024, there were more than 31 lottery wins in Melbourne’s north, with residents collectively taking home more than $38m in prize money.

The Lucky Charm Craigieburn’s owner Nicole Knothe said the $20m win was the biggest division one prize to have landed at her outlet.

“This is such an exciting and life-altering win for one of our lucky customers,” she said.

“We would love to send all our happy thoughts to our lucky winner.

“We hope the win brings them joy, comfort and the ability to change many lives for the better.”

The winning numbers in Powerball draw 1494 on Thursday, January 2 were 21, 27, 9, 22, 15, 18 and 8.

Across Australia, there was one division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1494 – the entry from the Craigieburn man in Victoria.

Meanwhile, a Ballarat resident or visitor has scored $2.14 million in the weekend’s TattsLotto draw, as yet unclaimed, with a ticket bought from Lucas Gifts & Lotto.

The mystery ticket-holder held one of the 14 division one winning entries nationally in the January 4 draw.
