A shocked northern Melbourne couple is pondering how to spend their new millions after winning a life-changing lottery.

The victorious Broadmeadows couple were among the eight division one winning entries at Saturday’s draw 4499.

Each entry won a cash prize of $2.5m.

The now millionaire-duo, who wished to remain anonymous, said they usually stuck to 10 games but added two extra this time only to discover the 12th ticket scored them the win.

“On Sunday afternoon, my partner and I were saying we need a bigger place, then I joked and said, ‘Let me check my Tattslotto tickets,” the winning man said.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes. I asked my partner can you count how many zeros there are. I didn’t know if I was reading it right.

“I normally do ten games, but because we were playing together, I decided to go for 12 this time, and on the 12th line, we won.”

Their winning 12-game entry was purchased from The Lott app.

The lucky couple said they would have a “good think” about what they wanted to do with their millions, but they would use the money to go on a holiday and also invest.

“Thankfully, I have the day off work today,” he said.

The winning numbers in Tattslotto draw 4499 on August 31 were 6, 39, 15, 20, 32 and 4, while the supplementary numbers were 30 and 1.

Eight division one winning entries were made across the country in draw 4499 — four in Victoria, two in New South Wales, and one each in Queensland and Western Australia.

In the last financial year, about 132.8m winners collectively claimed more than $4.4bn in prize money from lotteries, while Australia’s official lotteries contributed over $1.8bn through state lottery taxes.

However, not everyone who has taken home a jackpot has lived happily ever after.
