A fiery ex-boyfriend who broke into a man’s home and stuck a knife in his pillow, believing the man had slept with his ex during their relationship, has avoided jail.
Callan O’Riley-Brooks, 19, was sentenced to a three-year community corrections order at the County Court on November 12, having pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated burglary and making a threat to kill.
O’Riley-Brooks told police he filmed himself ransacking the man’s Kinglake home after 1pm on July 16, 2019, and sent the footage out on Snapchat.
The court heard he had told his ex-girlfriend he was going to kill the man before he drove to the man’s house, where no one was home.
The teen, who had just turned 18, then kicked his way into the house, trashing the man’s bedroom and flipping a desk, before using a filleting knife he had with him to stab the man’s pillow.
The man’s father came home shortly after to find the mess and the knife sticking out of the pillow.
O’Riley-Brooks told police “he’d flipped his sh*t” after finding out the man had slept with his ex-girlfriend when he was arrested the next day.
He said his behaviour was “f*cked and weird”.
The court heard the teen was on methamphetamine at the time, and was diagnosed as still being in a drug-induced psychosis six days later, when he sought medical help after being released on bail.
It was heard the former Bendigo Catholic College student had a history of behavioural problems, having been diagnosed with ODD as a young child and left school at Year 9.
O’Riley-Brooks worked in concreting in Ballarat before starting work for an earth moving company in Melbourne, and according to him, hanging around with the “wrong crowd”.
But it was heard that while on bail he had moved to Rochester with his mum and had got another full-time job.
Judge Chris Ryan said he accepted the youthful offender was remorseful and had good rehabilitation prospects.
