A violent stabbing at Broadmeadows Central has renewed calls for police to be stationed at shopping centres.

Four males — including a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old — have been charged over the incident, in which a 22-year-old man was allegedly stabbed with a pair of scissors near the Woolworths supermarket exit of the Pascoe Vale Rd centre about 12.10pm on Friday, January 4.

Police will allege the group had approached the man before an altercation broke out.

The victim was allegedly stabbed in his lower leg with a pair of scissors.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two men, aged 19 and 21, from Broadmeadows, and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested and charged with assault-related offences.

A 15-year-old boy was also arrested and charged and is due to face a children’s court at a later date.

A relative of the victim, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Leader the victim had suffered extensive blood loss as a result of the stabbing.

She said he was due to undergo major surgeries in an effort to repair several veins and an artery in his leg.

Former Liberal candidate for Yuroke, Jim Overend, said the attack bolstered his push to install police shopfronts at shopping centres.

“This violence seems to be happening more and more,” he said.

“People are afraid — they won’t go to shopping centres and walk around at night.

“Having police in shopping centres will put more confidence back in the public and deter violence from happening.”

But detective Senior Sergeant Ray Freeman, who heads the Hume crime investigation unit, said “property-related crime was more of a problem than assaults at shopping centres”.

“The bigger problem facing shopping centres is the thefts that go on there,” he said.

Theft reports in Hume jumped nine per cent from 5491 recorded incidents to 6040 during the year ending September, 2018, according to the latest Crime Statistics Agency data.

Broadmeadows Central centre manager Jeroam Whittington said the centre was assisting police in relation to the stabbing.

“The safety of our customers, retailers, teams and the wider community is always our priority,” he said.
