A BROADMEADOWS woman battling a chronic lung condition has been forced to outlay thousands of dollars to stop pollution from the area’s severe traffic congestion coming into her home.

Blair St resident Lee Scott suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a chronic lung disease which causes shortness of breath.

At a cost of $13,000 Ms Scott has had to double-glaze all the windows in her home to cope with the noise and pollution coming from the “constant stream of traffic” in her notoriously busy street.

“I can’t open the windows to let fresh air in because we’ve got lots of diesel coming from trucks outside that are often stuck in traffic jams,” she said.

“Greasy dust gets in the house, it gets caught in the flywire door.

“It’s really annoying and really noisy, it’s just awful and it’s getting worse and worse.”

Ms Scott said she was worried about the traffic impact of new developments planned at the former Hard Yakka site on King William St and at the former Broadmeadows Primary School site on Nicholas St.

“I’m just wondering how the roads are going to cope with the extra people,” she said.

“How many of those people moving into those new single units are going to have cars?”

Hume council’s planning and development director Michael Sharp said the council was working to support the community by increasing the range of housing types available.

“Broadmeadows is a designated major activity centre … and substantial strategic planning work at a state and local government level has taken place to unlock the potential of the area,” he said.

“Development applications are then assessed on their merit and in the context of the neighbourhood.

“The change in zoning to housing will also mean less heavy vehicles (such as) trucks — on the roads.”

People concerned about air pollution in their neighbourhood are urged to contact the EPA’s pollution hotline on 1300 372 842.

The EPA has a limited number of local condition monitors placed in communities where there is a specific pollution concern, such as in West Footscray following last month’s factory fire.
