Big-hearted Craigieburn fish and chip shop owners are doing their bit to support the homeless this Christmas, by donating free lunch packs to those needing a feed.

In what has become an annual tradition, co-owners Robbie Sandhu, Khushpreet Kaur, Vishal Vohra and Meetu Arora are giving away free lunch packs comprising of menu items such as potato cakes, chips, fish, burgers and dim sims to people who would otherwise go hungry.

“We give them whatever they ask for off the menu,” Mr Sandhu said, adding the special offer was available for the whole month of December.

“We have people coming from everywhere — not just Craigieburn.

“It’s quite popular due to the number of people sharing posts about it on Facebook.”

Mr Sandhu and his coworkers have been praised by members of the Craigieburn Community Facebook page, with some hailing the initiative as a reflection of the “true spirit of Christmas”.

Denise Miceli said it was “great to see members of the community opening their hearts to the less fortunate”.

Mr Sandhu said the original idea was born out of a desire to ensure “nobody sleeps hungry” at Christmas time.

“We’ve seen people who are struggling for food and looking for leftovers, so we decided this is one way we can give back to our local community,” he said.

“We’re just playing our part and doing whatever we can do to help.”

Craigieburn Fish and Chips also give away free lunch packs to needy people in March every year to celebrate its anniversary since opening in 2015.

It was a finalist in this year’s Hume Business Awards for best cafe and restaurant.

The shop is located at Craigieburn Plaza, 10 Craigieburn Rd, Craigieburn.

Opening hours are from 11am-9pm every day.
