VicRoads has finally revealed that long-delayed works on the notorious Sunbury roundabout are expected to be finished mid-year.

The response by the roads authority comes after a Sunbury Leader online story last week highlighting its refusal to answer specific questions on the timeline and reasons for the delay.

It officially confirms another delay to the completion of the upgrades to the Gap Rd and Horne St intersection to replace the roundabout with traffic lights, extra traffic lanes, a dedicated bike lane and pedestrian crossings.

Work has been underway since early 2018 and was initially earmarked to finish at the end of that year. VicRoads has since indicated the changes would be completed by the end of May.

VicRoads’ acting regional metro north west director Fatima Mohamed said contractors had now advised the authority work would be completed mid-year.

Ms Mohamed said VicRoads would keep the community up to date as work progressed.

“This project has been complex and challenging, but it’s important we get it right,” she said.

“We understand and share the community’s frustrations about the delays and we thank people for their patience.

“We’re working closely with our contractor to deliver a safer Gap Rd and Horne St intersection as soon as we can.”

The Leader understands the project has encountered issues with drainage systems and service relocation.

Former Sunbury business owner Colin McKinnon was one resident frustrated by a lack of updates.

“Everyone in Sunbury is a bit frustrated. You’re coming along Horne St and you’ve got half a mile of cars in front of you,” he said.

Sunbury state Labor MP Josh Bull did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.
