Burning questions about a ”poorly” planned stretch of crucial roadworks in Sunbury remain unanswered.

Upgrades to the Gap Rd and Horne St intersection to replace the roundabout with traffic lights have been under way since early last year and were initially marked to be finished at the end of 2018.

New lights, extra traffic lanes, dedicated bike lane and pedestrian crossing formed part of the $9.6 million State Government investment, but questions remain over when it will be completed.

When VicRoads was approached by the Leader, acting regional metro north west director Fatima Mohamed confirmed the project had run into “challenges” but would not say whether or not the timeline would be pushed out once more.

“This important upgrade will improve travel times and ease congestion for the tens of thousands of drivers who rely on the intersection every day,” she said.

“There have been a number of challenges, but we appreciate the patience of drivers, businesses and the local community as we work with the contractor to finalise this project.”

Vic rally calls for safer regional roads

According to the VicRoads website, works are slated to finish by the end of autumn, despite initially being scheduled for a late 2018 finish.

Former Sunbury business owner Colin McKinnon was just one resident frustrated a lack of updates.

“It seems to be very poorly put together as far as planning goes,” he said.

“Everyone in Sunbury is a bit frustrated. You’re coming along Horne St and you’ve got half a mile of cars in front of you.”

Mr McKinnon said he hoped to get some answers soon.

“I’d like to get it open as soon as possible and some care within the community,” he said.
