A Sunbury speedster clocked at more than 200km/h on the Calder Freeway would have been instantly killed if he made one wrong move, police say.
Fawkner Highway Patrol officers, who described the behaviour as “insane”, caught the 39-year-old man travelling at almost 120km/h over the speed limit in Sunbury on Sunday morning.
The Kia Stinger he was driving was detected at 228km/h in a 110 zone before he was stopped by police on the freeway near Gap Rd just after 11am.
The driver was arrested for conduct endangering life, driving at a dangerous speed and other traffic related offences and will face court at a later date.
His car was also immediately impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1005.
Sergeant Dean Pickering said the reckless behaviour put road users at risk.
“If this went wrong it would have ended in twisted metal and instant death,” Sgt Pickering said.
“To put it into perspective this driver is 118km/h above the limit.
“We are somewhat speechless that someone would make a decision so bad.”
