Melbourne northwest crime: Pregnant lady showered with glass in random drive-by attack

A pregnant woman was showered with glass after an object was thrown out of a car window in Sunbury, while clueless crooks forgot to turn off a CCTV camera before stealing it. See what crimes are making news in Melbourne’s north and northwest this week.

A pregnant woman was showered with glass after another motorist threw an object out of their window in Sunbury on Australia Day.

The woman was driving along Racecourse Rd on January 26 when an object flew out the window of a white Holden sedan bearing red P-plates travelling in the opposite direction.

The object hit the woman’s windscreen and caused significant damage.

She and her parents, who were also in the car, were showered with small shards of glass. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

GLENROY

Careless crooks have stolen a CCTV camera from a Glenroy building site. Fawkner police are investigating after the burglars broke into the Daley St site just before 5.30am on January 25. Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said they took a camera from the front of the property but were unaware that it continued recording and transmitting images for a number of days following the theft. Police have released images of two men and a woman who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

YARRAVILLE / SEDDON

A good Samaritan has turned on a man she was helping when she allegedly stole his car. Sergeant Tim McKerracher said the 69-year-old man fell over in Charles St, Seddon and was aided by a woman claiming to be a nurse. “The woman helped the man up from a fall and in the process stole the man’s wallet and car keys before stealing his car nearby,” he said. “The woman has gone onto use the stolen credit card at numerous retail outlets before being arrested by members of the Maribyrnong Vehicle Crime Team.” A 34-year-old Yarraville woman was arrested earlier this month and remanded on the charges of theft of a motor vehicle and deception. Police are still searching for a stolen white 2011 Toyota Hilux with the registration 1CU 9NM.

TULLAMARINE

A man was shot by police at a McDonalds on Mickleham Rd in Tullamarine after allegedly ramming two police cars. Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina O’Grady said officers caught the man and a female passenger acting suspiciously in the carpark of the fast-food chain just after midnight on February 7. “As the police officers got out of their car to approach the pair, the driver allegedly accelerated and drove directly at the officers, ramming two police vehicles and causing one of the officers to discharge his firearm,” she said. The 36-year-old Ararat man received a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder and was taken to hospital under police guard. A 36-year-old Stawell woman was also arrested.

BRAYBROOK

A teenager accused of stealing a car was arrested on Australia Day after a 150m foot chase by police. Officers caught the alleged thief about 3am on January 26 after he ran from a car in Lacy St, Braybrook that police records indicated was stolen. Sergeant Brett Hall said a tasked vehicle theft patrol found the car. “When we stopped, the occupant ran and was run down after a 150m foot chase,” he said. “An 18-year-old man from Braybrook was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle. “People think we don’t patrol at all hours of the night (but) clearly we do.”

FOOTSCRAY

A man has been charged with armed robbery after he allegedly threatened staff with a syringe at a fast food store in Footscray and stole cash. Police said a man entered the food outlet in the Footscary CBD about 8.40am on January 21 brandishing a syringe and took money from the till before leaving the area. A man was arrested a short time later in Richmond. Detective Senior Constable Jessica Cook said a Footscray man, 33, had been charged with armed robbery and remanded to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

MARIBYRNONG / PASCOE VALE / COBURG

A Pascoe Vale man has been accused of using stolen identity documents to obtain more than $2000 worth of goods in Maribyrnong and Coburg. Police said staff at Highpoint Shopping Centre raised concerns about the ID a man had produced on January 21. A short time later a 41-year-old was found in a bank nearby in possession of the allegedly stolen documents. He was charged with multiple deception offences and remanded to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

A Footscray man has been accused of stealing more than $10,000 worth of goods from liquor stores and supermarkets across Melbourne. Police arrested the 37-year-old man at a Yarraville home on January 22. He was charged with multiple counts of shop theft and was remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
