VTCA: PEGS star continues remarkable start to the Division 1 season

A PEGS star might just be the best bowler in the VTCA right now after he continued his remarkable start to the season. Here’s what his captain said about his form.

PEGS star Ruvin Peiris might be the most in-form bowler in the VTCA right now.

The opening bowler has two five-wicket hauls to start the season including 5-11 on Saturday to help his side have Seddon all out for 89 on day one of their Division 1 clash.

Peiris, along with Shakeem Clarke (4-38), tore through the visitors’ batting line-up with only Sanjula Abeywickrama (33 runs off 81 balls) and Aman Khan (20 off 22) the only players to reach double figures.

It was a performance which continued a brilliant start to the season for Peiris who took 5-46 against West Coburg St Andrews a week earlier.

Stand-in PEGS captain Jordan Cook said he couldn’t have been more impressed.

“I wasn’t here for pre-season but by all accounts, he’s been training very hard and put in a mountain of work through winter,” he said.

“It’s always nice when you can put together that sort of bowling performance led by two class opening bowlers. Ruvin managed to do it into a pretty strong wind as well which made it all the more impressive.”

PEGS eventually reached 5-145 at stumps led by a run a ball 59 from opener Rowan Mendis as he shared a 60-run opening stand with Connor Callanan.

Heading into the second day this weekend, Cook is hopeful his side can still put a big score on the board.

“There’s a couple of different outcomes which is a good position for us to be in,” he said.

“Hopefully the guys out in the middle can spend a lot more time out there and add some runs. If the chance comes, I think we’ll definitely go for the outright victory.”

Cook is currently leading the side with Carlos Maynard still yet to arrive in Australia.

After some leadership experience last year, he said he is enjoying the role.

“It’s completely different and I’ve tried to bring some of the lessons I’ve learnt from back home (in the UK),” he said.

“We’ve got a fantastic group to work with. The good thing about this club is the availability of different people. Everyone is able to step up when they’re called upon.”
