This year’s Royal Melbourne Show is set to be greener than ever after a new focus on sustainability.
Paperless ticketing, underground water catchments, removal of plastic straws and replacement of high energy lighting with LED lights are just some of the changes that will be made for the show.
The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria chief executive Paul Guerra said the changes were made after an investigation on the Melbourne Showgrounds carbon footprint in 2014.

“Since this audit the RASV has adopted a number of important environmental strategies and practises across Melbourne Showgrounds,” he said.
The changes would not only affect the Royal Melbourne Show, but more than 650 events and activities held at the showgrounds each year.

Mr Guerra said that this year’s show was on track to be more sustainable than ever. Last year, 72 per cent of all waste from the show was recycled.
This year, showgoers will be able to do their part for the environment by using three different types of waste collection bins throughout the grounds and using recyclable containers and utensils.
