Plans for a new gymnasium and indoor stadium in Footscray have been revealed.
The upgrades are part of a new larger RecWest Footscray centre, which will also include an outdoor and indoor multipurpose courts, cafe, meeting spaces, a kitchen, replacement Scout facilities and extra storage.
The upgrade is part of the West Footscray Community Facilities Plan, which will also see works done to Johnson Reserve and Shorten and Barrett Reserves.
A new community pavilion, tennis court, upgraded picnic area, turf field and expanded carparking spaces are set for Johnson Reserve.
While at Shorten and Barrett Reserves, new multi-use cricket nets, and an expanded playground will be built.
The works will require the closure of Market St.
The council have said the closure of the street would allow for greater connection between the two reserves, and would increase open space and community connectedness.
An independent consultant found that re-routed traffic from Market St to Blandford St would not create an increase of vehicles on surrounding roads.
The plans, now in the draft stage, will cost $25 million dollars.

The project aims to provide centres and sporting grounds that meet a growing community need and demand, while providing safe and accessible public open spaces.
Maribyrnong Mayor Sarah Carter thanked everyone who shared feedback last year on the initial plan.
“We all know these are well-loved recreation spaces, and we think these new and improved facilities will help provide for our growing community,” she said.
“I encourage everyone to let us know what they think of the new concept designs.”
Maribyrnong Council is now seeking feedback on the proposed plans until May 3.
