Speed limits will be dropped to 40km/h across several Maribyrnong suburbs.
The reduced speed limit will be introduced on council-owned roads in Footscray, Yarraville and Kingsville this month.
The decision comes after the council trialled the lower limit in Seddon and parts of Yarraville early last year.
It was based off results from Local Area Traffic Management Studies and feedback from locals who felt unsafe to walk or cycle in their suburbs due to speedy cars.
The partnership, with VicRoads, will see the 40 km/h limit eventually rolled out to the remaining suburbs in Maribyrnong over the next three years.
Maribyrnong Mayor Sarah Carter hoped to keep the community safe by reducing the speed limits.
“Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike all have a right to feel safe when using our roads and this initiative will deliver greater active transport outcomes for our city,” she said.

The council hopes the reduced limit will see a decrease in serious injury and fatalities arising from cars, as well as encouraging people to ride or walk instead of go by car.
The City says it also expects the move to reduce road congestion, air and noise pollution, enhance fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Seddon and Yarraville
Last year, the City of Maribyrnong began its trial of lower speed limits in Seddon and parts of yarraville. These will remain.
The affected areas are bounded by Williamstown Rd, the West Gate Freeway, Hyde St, Whitehall St, Maribyrnong St and Buckley St.
Speed limits on arterial roads managed by VicRoads/ Department of Transport will remain unchanged.

Work will commence on installing new 40km/h speed limit signs this month, and take about 6-8 weeks, the council says.
The area is bounded by Ballarat Rd, Gordon St, Buckley St, Maribyrnong St, Hopkins St, Railway Place and Jamieson Ave.
