A former high school teacher moonlighting as a drug trafficker has avoided prison after his fed-up ex dobbed him in to police over his 30-bong-a-day marijuana habit.

Raymond Gerard Halliwell, 56, pleaded guilty in the County Court on Thursday to trafficking a drug of dependence and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He was placed on a community corrections order and fined $1000.

The courtheard Halliwell, who had been a business management, religion, and cookery teacher for 16 years, was “smoking up to 30 bongs a day” when his then-girlfriend reported him to police.

His ex, Sharon Wilson, discovered a stash of drugs and more than $33,000 hidden in an Esky and two Aldi bags in her Albion home last year.

Ms Wilson called the police who searched the bedroom and found a stash of drugs including marijuana, methamphetamine, MDMA, cocaine, amphetamine, tetra hydra cancibole, Alprazolam, diazepam, oxycodone, psilocybin, and Tramadol.

Halliwell told police he had been paid $100 an hour to deliver drugs.

He was released on bail.

Halliwell had been in a motorcycle accident three years ago leaving him with chronic pain, which he managed with illicit drugs.

Judge Georgiou took into account Halliwell’s guilty plea and said he had made “efforts to change” by completing a men’s behaviour change program and attending a family violence program and mental health program.

“I accept you are genuinely remorseful. You regret your actions,” Judge Georgiou said.

Halliwell, who now lives in Mildura, was sentenced to a three-year community corrections order including 300 hours of community service, and fined $1000.
