WHERE IS MELBOURNE’S BEST PIE?
The Scottish pair emigrated to Australia in 2001, but only started their shop, Mowatt’s, three years ago.
Mrs Mowatt said she was “shocked” to get the winning call as she picked up her children from school.
“It was brilliant. It was actually quite emotional. You put so many hours into your work. When you get recognised by a big judging panel it’s a bit of a shock,” she said.
A number of their other pies were also lauded, including a traditional Scottish pie.
Mrs Mowatt said the secret to any successful pie was in its ingredients.
“There are a few things that make a good pie — like the slow cooking of the filling. Stevie is a butcher, so it’s all about the ingredients that go into it. Never anything frozen,” she said.
Their business has been family run since its initial inception. Despite the long hours, the duo agree it’s a passion project they’ve grown into a career.
“We’ve got four children and it’s myself and Stevie at the shop. Our eldest daughters often help us as well,” Mrs Mowatt said.
“Stevie is quite often here at 3am.”
