THE PIZZA BAR, 150 MASCOMA ST, STRATHMORE
This hidden, Strathmore pizza joint is probably the area’s best kept secret.
The place is run by dedicated and extremely friendly staff who will go out of their way to make sure you’re happy.
TRY: Their most popular pizza, The Mascome Special, with cheese, ham, salami, onion, cabana, chicken, bacon and BBQ sauce.
PIATTO, 141 PUCKLE ST, MOONEE PONDS
Well known for its crispy, thin base Piatto’s is a regular joint for Moonee Ponds’ locals.
The pizza menu includes a vegan pizza with San Marzano tomatoes, vegan mozzarella, roasted capsicum, mushroom, Spanish onion and oregano.
They also have a Nutella pizza for dessert if you’re game.
Free delivery service to Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale, Essendon, Aberfeldie and West Brunswick.
TRY: The classic Margherita with its thin, crispy base.
SCOOZI, 136 UNION RD, ASCOT VALE
If you want authenticity, look no further.
This Sicilian restaurant is the third pizza joint in Australia to be acknowledged by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana — the certification of authentic Naples-style pizza is awarded only to those who meet the non-profit organisation’s strict criteria.
This includes a stone wood-fired oven, which reaches 400 degrees so the pizza is cooked between 60 and 90 seconds.
Pizza chef Phillip Bruno is now President for The Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani in Australasia.
The only other restaurant in Melbourne with the accreditation is 400 Gradi — home to chef Johnny Di Francesco who was crowned the World Pizza Champion at the Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza in Italy in 2014.
TRY: The Moreton Bay Bug Pizza with Napoli sauce, fior di latte, Moreton Bay bugs, parsley, smoked Sicilian sea salt, on a rustic fried-baked pizza.
OLD SCHOOL PIZZA, 14-20 NICHOLSON ST, COBURG
These guys are so popular they had to cancel a bunch of takeaway orders because they ran out of dough.
Probably because of the popularity of the Jawbreaker — an entire pizza shaped as one giant slice that you will seriously struggle to take a bite out of.
TRY: The Jawbreaker Gormet Pumpkin pizza with roasted pumpkin, baby spinach, Spanish onion, pine nuts and crumbled halloumi.
TERRANOVA, 333 MORELAND RD, COBURG
A popular family-run restaurant serving large pizzas with generous toppings reaching all the way to the crust — need we say more?
TRY: The Terranova Special with tomato, mozzarella, bresaola (cured beef), olives and capers.
PENNY YOUNG, 22 YOUNG ST, MOONEE PONDS
It doesn’t get better than live music, craft beer, and woodfired pizza.
Not only do these guys serve a brilliant selection of beer, they sell more than 350 beers in the bottle shop next door.
The place can quickly fill up, so get in early if you have a group.
TRY: The Broccoli E Salciccia with broccoli, pork sausage, garlic and fior di latte.
URBAN DOUGH, 305 BUCKLEY ST, ESSENDON AND 2A/951 SYDNEY ROAD, COBURG NORTH
A small, mostly takeaway pizza joint, that packs a might punch.
One customer said “the diet doesn’t exist after finding this place”.
Another said she ordered 15 pizzas takeaway for a party and every single one was top quality.
TRY: The crowd-favourite Peri Peri Chicken and Avocado.
