BRAYBROOK
A man has managed to escape unharmed after his Braybrook house went up in flames on March 19.
Fire crews were called to the blaze in Lily St at 5.14am after callers reported windows breaking and flames coming from the house.
Firefighters arrived on scene within seven minutes to find flames coming from the windows and roof and threatening houses on both sides of the property.
More than 25 firefighters brought the blaze under control in 25 minutes and stopped it from spreading to neighbouring properties, while avoiding live power lines that had come down across the road.
Firefighters believe there was no working smoke alarm installed, which would have alerted the man to the fire earlier.
Commander Graeme O’Sullivan said small fires could grow very quickly.
When people were asleep they can lose their sense of smell, he said.
“A working smoke alarm will alert you to the presence of smoke and means you’re much more likely to survive a house fire,” Commander O’Sullivan said.
MFB fire investigators are working to determine the cause.
