Isolation means more time to spend with a new pet, RSPCA says

If you’re already getting stir-crazy at home, a new pet could be the perfect thing to help ease the next few months of isolation. And this is why the RSPCA says a pandemic is the perfect time to adopt.

While you’re stuck at home, a furry friend could be the perfect thing to help the time tick over.

The RSPCA has launched their ‘Pawfect Companion’ campaign, encouraging lonely Victorians self-isolating at home due to COVID-19 to add an extra little family member to the mix.

As more and more workers are sent home, events cancelled and stores closed, this could be an opportunity to spend some special time with a new pet.

RSPCA Victoria chief officer Liz Walker said it was a “great time” to help a pet settle into their new home.

“It’s an opportunity to spend quality time with them and dedicate time to training and bonding exercises,” she said.

Ms Walker said there would be plenty of benefits for humans as well.

“The research tells us that owning a pet has a huge number of benefits for our emotional wellbeing,” she said.

“For many people, including families, children and those on their own, pets will be a significant source of companionship and comfort over the coming months.”

According to the RSPCA, having a pet often leads to increased cardiovascular health including lower blood pressure, motivation to get in some regular exercise and a strengthened immune system.

They can even make children more empathetic and have higher self-esteem.

To combat the spread of COVID-19, the RSPCA will be taking bookings for potential adopters to make an appointment before coming into the shelter.

Social distancing rules will still apply.

Over at The Lost Dogs Home, adoptions are also operating on an appointment system.

The Lost Dogs Home spokeswoman Suzana Talevski said they thought anytime was the perfect time to adopt a pet – even now.

“Now more than ever humans need their furry friends to help them through tough times,” she said.

“We are doing everything possible to prioritise the safety of our customers, our people and the animals in our care during the coronavirus outbreak.”
