A rookie baker from Hadfield has beaten top notch professionals to take out second place in a state cooking competition.
Rosario Thomas, 52, wowed the judges with her impressive blackforest cake which earnt her a second place medal in the Three Layer Gateau category of the Baking Association of Australia’s annual Victorian Baking Show.
The mouth-watering creation featured a cherry centre, a handmade chocolate flower made from pure chocolate and tempered chocolate around the sides.
Mrs Thomas, who is a full-time baking student at Kangan Institute, said she was “dumbfounded” when she found out she’d done so well.
“I couldn’t digest it when they told me I won second, I didn’t feel anything, I didn’t know what to feel or say so I went blank,” she said.
“Then I thought, oh my goodness, I competed with professionals and big bakeries and I won.”
Contestants in the competition were only allowed to use one board at the bottom of the cake – so all three tiers had to stand up and avoid collapsing with little support.

Before taking up baking school, the talented cook practised as a nurse.
It was only when she went on maternity leave before having her son that she decided to pursue her life passion of baking.
“I like creating things, to think of something to create or decorate out of nothing and then to see people say oh my gosh, how did you do that?”
She said her love of baking was inspired by watching her big brother – who is a cake decorator in the US – bake at home.
“I look up to him as my inspiration,” Mrs Thomas said.
She said her confidence had skyrocketed after the high placing.
“I just bake at home for friends and family and I thought I’m not good enough to do that competition,” Mrs Thomas said.
“Now I feel like anyone can do it if you just try your best.”
