Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for a fidget-spinning staffy mural

He’s appeared in Pizza Hut ads and on breakfast TV and has raised thousands for injured wildlife. Now, the community wants to see Sunbury’s fidget-spinning sensation immortalised in a huge mural.

Axle the Fidget Spinning Dog

Sunbury’s most famous four-legged resident - Axle the fidget-spinning dog - could soon be immortalised in art.

More than 200 people have signed a petition for a giant giant mural of the staffy star who has raised $7000 to help wildlife injured in Australia’s bushfires.

Friend and fan Emma Douglas, who started petition, said Axle deserved his own mural by the artist who painted internet comedian Celeste Barber, who has raised more than $50 million for bushfire relief.

“I saw that Celeste Barber had a mural done for her efforts, and I figured how good would it be for Axle who has achieved so much and raised so much money?” she said.

“Axle is of a breed that’s very misunderstood and is doing so many wonderful things for the community,” she said

Since shooting to internet fame in 2017, he has appeared in South American Pizza Hut ads, locked down a talent agent and made his breakfast TV debut.

Owner Belinda Shipp said she was humbled by the community’s ongoing support.

“It definitely makes it all worthwhile,” she said.

“We’re always here to make people smile and raise awareness for certain issues.”

HUGE CASH BOOST FOR BUSHFIRE AFFECTED WILDLIFE

Aside from bushfire relief, Axle has raised money for the Good Friday appeal and acts as an ambassador for Stafford Rescue Victoria.

Despite the recent groundswell of support, Ms Shipp said fame hasn’t gone to Axle’s head.

“He’s as down to earth as ever, and I don’t think he’ll ever change,” she said.

Axle’s bushfire fundraising efforts will culminate in a sausage sizzle from 10am-2pm this Sunday at Sunbury PetStock.

“We just have to say a huge thankyou for the support we’ve received for both Axle and myself,” she said.
