Moments before, the car had been seen travelling over a roundabout and on the wrong side of the road around Aitken St and Hamilton St. The driver then mounted a kerb, crashed into street furniture and came to a stop near the bottle shop.

The driver was taken to Gisborne police station where he blew 0.185.

Sergeant Mustafa Erin said it was lucky no one was injured.

“We believe he had been drinking at a local licenced premises before getting behind the wheel,” he said.

“He ended up in quite an awkward position and he was taken straight from there to the station.

“It’s not a reading you see often and certainly not in Gisborne and it’s fortunate that there weren’t any other drivers and pedestrians around.”

The man will be charged on summons for a variety of charges and had his vehicle seized and licence suspended for 12 months immediately.

Gisborne police also seized the vehicle of speeding motorist travelling at 149km/h southbound on the Calder Freeway last Wednesday at 2.30am.

A Mitcham man in his 30s was intercepted in the incident, and his Toyota Corolla was impounded for 30 days.

Gisborne police also immediately suspended the licences of three other drivers immediately after detecting them travelling at 25km/h or more above the 60km/h limit on Gisborne-Melton Rd.

A P-plater from Romsey was travelling at 103km/h while another P-plater from Melton was observed driving at 90km/h and a third driver from Melton at 88km/h.

The operation targeted commuting drivers last Friday morning.
