A drunk driver accused of being more than three times the legal limit has crashed into two houses in Essendon.

Police said the 47-year-old Essendon man lost control of his 2018 black GT Mustang and crashed into two Glass St homes about 1.45am on December 13.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Scout Rigoni said the driver returned an evidentiary breath test of 0.166.

She said the seven occupants home at the time were not injured and each dwelling suffered minor damage.

“The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene,” she said.

“He undertook a preliminary breath test and was transported to Fawkner Police Station where he returned an alleged reading of 0.166.”

The man’s licence was immediately suspended and he is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and traffic related offences.

He will face Broadmeadows Magistrate’s Court at a later date.

The frightening incident comes as police launched their annual Christmas, New Year and summer holiday period road policing operation.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said Operation Roadwise would have a particular focus on drink and drug driving in the lead up to Christmas.

“Twelve people lost their lives on our roads last year during the festive season,” she said.

“Many people will be attending parties and other events to celebrate the end of the year, so if you are going to have a few drinks, then make sure you’ve planned how to get home without driving.”

The operation runs until January 5 next year.
