Fathers are getting together in Coburg to share experiences and have a laugh thanks to a new group.

Dads of Coburg held its first meet up at O’Heas Bakery on August 17, with 12 fathers gathering to have a chat and a coffee.

David Conti organised the group with thanks to Dads Group Inc and brought his 15-month-old son Frankie to have a chat with other new or expecting fathers.

“I thought we might only have two dads turn up and I would have been happy with that but to have 12 was great,” he said.

“I have a number of mates who went through challenges early on so for me it was so important to offer a place for dads to get together.”

The group was formed with assistance from Dads Group Inc Victorian state manager Adam Tardif and Moreland Council’s Maternal and Child Health team.

Special dads on Father's Day

Mr Tardif said that the group was vital as one in five fathers lose contact with close friends in the first year of their child being born.

“One father said it was the first time he and his baby went out without its mum and that was really important, not just for him to spend the quality time with his child but for the mum to have a break too,” he said.

“Without having a connection with others who are doing what you are it makes life much more challenging.”
