Older people who are lonely will be encouraged to meet new people in a new program from Merri Health.

Those over the age of 50 who were at risk of becoming socially isolated would be brought in and given one-on-one support before social activities and support groups are created.

The pilot program named Living Well, Ageing Well is being promoted alongside R U OK Day on September 12.

Arife Karaca, 66, said she looked forward to making new friends with people in her community.

A Coburg resident for more than 20 years, Ms Karaca said while her seven grandchildren kept her busy, she liked to get out in the community.

“I’ve never felt lonely but I like to go out and see new things and meeting new people,” she said.

“I like to communicate with people and I like going out and having fun.”

Program co-ordinator Matilda Nicholson said the program would also help participants link into other services provided by Merri Health.

“We’ll talk with the clients about what barriers they have in getting out in the community and hold monthly sessions on different wellness topics,” she said.

“We’ll look to roll out groups and activities once we start to identify gaps in the community.

“We’re hoping people are more connected to the community and it will increase their sense of well being.”
