After a long wait, Sunbury’s new major intersection has proven a huge hit with community members.
The State Government committed $9.6 million to replacing the old roundabout at Gap Rd and Horne St with traffic lights, extra lanes, pedestrian crossings and a dedicated bike lane.
Despite frustrations and delays, as reported by Leader, final works wrapped up in time for a traders’ festival on July 21.
The works have been given a resounding thumbs up from readers who commented on the S unbury Leader Facebook page.
Jennifer Davis said while the wait was frustrating, she loved the improvements.
“For the life of me, I can’t understand why it took so bloody long but it’s great,” she said.
“So much safer than that congested roundabout.”
Maree Audesho said the new set-up made her feel much safer. “Loving it as l travel back and forth through this intersection. l love not having my life in danger anymore, hated the roundabout of death,” she wrote.
“But there will always be someone who runs a light and causes an accident.”
Vincent Gatt was one resident concerned for the future, “Looks great, but enjoy it while you can with approved plans for changes at the rail crossing for 2024-25”.
State Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull told the Leader in April the level crossing removal would have “minimal impact” on the new signals.

“However, this will be assessed as part of project scoping and design,” he said at the time.
While many were pleased with the upgrades, some raised concerns about long waits when a train rolled through town.
“You still have to wait a good 10-15 minutes if you’re turning right into Station Rd. There is no room for cars to turn. So the lights do not give you a green arrow at all,” Janine Cirona wrote.
