Ballet meets rock in revolutionary dance theatre show Raise the Barre

The line between traditional and contemporary is blurred in dance extravaganza Raise the Barre. The fusion of ballet and rock – with a hint of comedy – is about to debut at theatres locally and internationally.

If you thought tutus and studded denim jackets were an unlikely combination, this new dance theatre production is about to set the record straight.

Masters of Choreography’s new show Raise the Barre is a fusion between rock and ballet with a touch of comedy to break up the impressive ballet, hip hop, contemporary, jazz and street dance numbers.

The traditionally contemporary show will debut at the Lighthouse Theatre in Warrnambool on Saturday, before making stops in Narre Warren, Frankston, Ringwood, Sale, Moonee Ponds, South Morang, Geelong and South Yarra.

The show will then travel internationally to perform in Singapore and London.

Masters of Choreography director Milo Masters, who came up with the concept with his wife Jennifer, said fusing together different styles of choreography made their show a little more unconventional.

“We can make things more dynamic and entertaining, we can make some beautiful choreography that hopefully no one has seen before,” he said.

“Everything is presented in a commercial format rather than a traditional format of ballet that someone would be accustomed to.”
