1 Million Trees Project wins big at Premier’s Sustainability Awards
About 30,000 trees have been planted in Moonee Valley in just three years — and they’re still thriving. Now, the council and others have been honoured with a prestigious award for the gigantic effort. This is how they did it.

A massive tree planting effort has paid off in Moonee Valley with the council part of an alliance to win a 2019 Premier’s Sustainability Award.
Greening the West received the gong for its 1 Million Trees Project, which led to 30,000 trees being planted across Moonee Valley from mid-2015 to mid-2018.
Moonee Valley and 15 other councils and organisations who are part of Greening the West were nominated for the Environmental Protection and Government categories of the award.
Moonee Valley Mayor Narelle Sharpe said the council was honoured to receive the award and be a part of the innovative initiative.
“This award acknowledges our commitment to a greener environment.,” she said.
Cr Sharpe said all 30,000 trees were still thriving.
“Between us we’ve planted just over one million trees and shrubs across 320 parks, reserves,
open space and roadsides with the help of 4500 volunteers.”

Moonee Valley planning and environment councillor Nicole Marshall said the trees would help contribute to a sustainable future and positive outcomes in the municipality.
“Not only is the Greening the West project enhancing our open spaces, it will also help
improve our environment, our economy and the health and wellbeing of our residents,” Cr
Marshall said.
“We look forward to continuing to make Moonee Valley a greener, more welcoming and
healthy place.”
