New four storey disability centre to be built Werribee after successful council pitch

Wyndham City Council has approved a planning permit for a new four-storey disability care centre in Werribee on Tuesday.

A new NDIS disability care centre is on its way to Werribee after getting the green light from Wyndham City Council.

A planning permit for the four-storey disability care centre at 12 Pyke St was approved by councillors on Tuesday.

The proposed centre will provide disability accommodation, subject to NDIS funding, and will be managed by a registered housing association.

The permit was lodged by healthcare property developers Equisent Group.

The building will be kitted out with 11 “medium term stay” rooms with ensuites, with six of the rooms also made up of a guest bed and a balcony.

Developers “do not envisage” the facility to provide permanent accommodation for residents.

Four two-bed unit dwellings with balconies are also included in the plan.

Dedicated spaces for occupational therapy and allied health services have also been planned for, as well as consulting rooms, a rehabilitation gym, nurse stations, dining rooms and a communal rooftop gardens.

Wyndham councillor Josh Gilligan said applications like these were “the ones council likes to see”.

“This is a great opportunity to bring high quality skills into this particular municipality and they really are high quality skills,” he said.

“These are the type of people and jobs you want to be creating to have a real aspirational component to that side Werribee, that is exciting to see it’s clearly in demand.”

Councillor Heather Marcus said a precinct like this in Wyndham was “well overdue”.

“I work in this field...and we have no accommodation for these people (in Wyndham). I just had a case where I couldn’t get accommodation for someone and I had to put them up in my own house,” she said.

A maximum of eight staff will work out of the centre at one time.

An eight vehicle carpark has received approval from council’s traffic engineers, with access to nearby public transport and on-street parking for visitors working in the favour of developers.
